Early Literacy Program

The May Court Club is an active participant in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board’s literacy program. On a weekly basis, members read to individual Junior and Senior Kindergarten students at schools located throughout the community.

So many children in our busy world miss the joy of having someone read them a story – one adult, one child. We can give a child that gift – a quiet few minutes to dip into a wonderful realm of beautiful pictures, enticing ideas, new words to ponder. We know the thrill of finding the key to “the secret garden”, and we are the lucky ones to have the chance to pass this on.

In 2008-09, our 11 Early Literacy readers devoted 333 hours to junior-kindergarten students in the school of their choice. There are many more schools that are eager for our time. Just an hour a week can plant that little seed in a child to love language and reading for the rest of their lives.
